The department of Applied mathematics was established in 1956, to teach engineering Mathematics to all undergraduate courses of engineering. In 1964, it was joined by Dr. G. Paria, D.Sc. as Professor ,and, gradually under his leadership M.Sc. Applied Mathematics course was started in 1969, and shortly after this, Ph.D. and research activities developed with an accelerated speed. The department soon secured a significant place in the sphere of higher learning in the whole of country beyond the boundary of M.P. During last 35 years, it produced 43 Ph.D. and more than 450 research papers, published in national and international journals. It owned a definite status in the field of continuum Mechanics, Elasticity, Rheology,Heat transfer,Liqid crystals, flow through porous medium. Scholars with Ph.D. from this department were working in leading engineering institutes and universities of this country. Later from 80, added to above field of expertise were Functional Analysis (linear and non-linear), Topology, Operation Research, Shock Waves, Fuzzy Sets and Systems, SQC and Reliability, Optimization Techniques.
Recently following the trends of I.I.T?s and leading engineering colleges of the country, it laid more thrust on computer science oriented mathematics and started a course on M.Sc. Applied Mathematics with specialization in computer science since July 2001. It also decided to start a course on M.Sc. in Compute Science (as in IIT Kharagpur). This was passed by the academic council and is awaiting permission of M.P. Technical University, Bhopal. It has changed the name of the department as Department of Applied Mathematics and Computational Science to develop expertise for work in numerical Analysis, Optimization techniques, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Statistical computing and simulation, computer aided geometrical design for the need of future advanced technology. It is developing it?s labs with a view to develop a computational research center for scientific and R&D activities like in I.I.T. Roorkee, for future.
