The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the major and oldest department of the institute which started functioning with undergraduate programme in 1956. Since then, the department has registered continuous growth in all directions. Department has at present 10 laboratories with latest experimental facilities. Fully equipped laboratory is under the process of development.
The department offers a P.G. Course in "Tribology & Maintenance Engineering", with effect from 1989. Two separate laboratories "Tribology Laboratory" & "Diagnostic Maintenance Laboratory" have also been developed. A subject of Mechatronics has been introduced in the undergraduate studies.
The students have presented papers at IIT's & NIT's and won prizes. SAE collegiate club, energized by the Society of Automotive Engineers in functioning in the institute having about 300 members. They organise, Automotive quiz, Pro-E, AutoCAD Workshops, Expert lectures, Paper presentation etc. for engineering students of the state. Students are exposed to practical knowledge by Industrial visits to the industries like Hindustan Motors, Tata Motors Pune, ARAI Pune, Thermal Power Plants, Indra Sagar Hydal Power Plant, etc.
Students have been selected in various competitive examinations. About 20 students were selected in CAT, 35 in GATE, 20 in GRE during the year 2002-2004. About 70 students were selected in campus and 3 were selected in Combined Defense Services.
The department is forging ahead with assistance under TEQIP and plans to expand facilities in Mechatronics and Material Testing Laboratory. The faculties who have attained superannuation are Dr. S. A. Asif, Dr. O. P. Dubey and Prof. N. K. Jain.
