On March 20, 2023, Shri Govind Parchani, Outstanding Scientist, Head of C&SD, and Chief Engineer at Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), delivered an expert lecture on “Seismic Design of RCC Buildings – Basic Principles and Codal Provisions.” The session was attended by a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate students, reflecting keen interest in the field of structural earthquake engineering.
During the lecture, Shri Parchani explained the fundamentals of seismic design, focusing on how reinforced concrete (RCC) structures respond to seismic forces. He highlighted the importance of designing buildings with adequate ductility, strength, and energy dissipation capacity to withstand earthquake-induced stresses.
The session also provided a detailed overview of Indian Standard codes (IS 1893 and IS 13920) relevant to seismic design, including practical interpretations and common challenges faced during implementation. By sharing insights from his professional experience, Shri Parchani helped bridge the gap between academic concepts and real-world engineering practices.
The lecture concluded with an interactive Q&A session, offering students a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of earthquake-resistant design and its critical role in ensuring structural safety.
