On December 6, 2023, the Government College of Engineering, Aurangabad hosted a series of three expert lectures as part of the ATAL Faculty Development Programme titled “Analytical and Statistical Techniques for Applied Research and Innovation.” The lectures were delivered by Dr. S. M. Narulkar, Head of the Civil Engineering – Applied Mechanics Department (CE-AMD), who brought his extensive expertise to the sessions.
The three lecture topics were:
-
Inferential Statistics and Hypothesis Testing
Dr. Narulkar explained the principles of inferential statistics, focusing on techniques to draw conclusions about populations from sample data. He covered essential concepts such as confidence intervals, p-values, hypothesis formulation, and types of errors, supported by practical examples. -
Goodness of Fit of Probability Distributions and Hypothesis Testing
The session addressed statistical methods to evaluate how well observed data fits probability distributions. Dr. Narulkar discussed tests like the Chi-square and Kolmogorov-Smirnov, emphasizing their application in model validation and hypothesis testing. -
Time Series Analysis
The final lecture explored methods to analyze data collected over time, including trend identification, seasonal variation, and forecasting. Key techniques such as moving averages, autoregressive models, and smoothing methods were introduced to equip participants for effective temporal data analysis.
Dr. Narulkar’s detailed explanations and practical insights helped participants grasp complex statistical tools essential for applied research and innovation. The sessions were highly appreciated for their clarity and relevance, empowering attendees to incorporate advanced analytical techniques into their academic and professional work.
